Have you ever wanted to record all the phone calls that you make on your Windows Mobile device? Or better off needed a good quality voice recording application on your PocketPC? Vito Technology' Audio Notes might be the one you're looking for. Read more for the review.
Introduction:
VITO Audio Notes is an application for your PocketPC that can record voice notes, lectures, calls* and whatever you put into that microphone. Though the default notes application that came with your PocketPC can do that with lot of limitations, VITO Audio Notes takes it one step further with numerous options making your recording process simple, easy and effective.
User Interface:
Just a simple and perfect user-interface. The application begins with an explorer type of window where the previously recorded files are listed. Each list starts with an icon showing recorded audio/inbound/outbound call followed by the caller's number with date and time. The caller number if found in your contacts list, it is replaced with the contact name too!
Navigation:
The menu panel accessed through the right Soft-key is clear and to the point! Left Soft-key is flagged to quick record mode.
Call Recording:
To begin with, not all windows mobile PocketPCs can record phone calls effectively. It is a manufacturer's limitation where the call is not routed through the OS and so it is difficult to capture the audio that comes out of the speakerphone. Hence when you try recording a call either through the default notes application or with any third-party application, you most likely end up recording your voice alone but not the voice of the person speaking on the other end. Technically it has recorded whatever that is spoken through the microphone but has skipped the voice coming from the speakerphone.
VITO AudioNotes is not a miraculous application that can overcome this limitation but it records in devices where possible. When we tested with Eten Glofiish X500+ Pocket PC, the call was recorded perfectly with voice from both the ends. HTC P3300 a.k.a. HTC Artemis gave a clear self voice but the voice from the other end was feable. So just in case if you plan to get this application solely for call recording, it is adviced that you take their 14-day trial.
The best thing here is, just a small option that has to be enabled from the menu and all calls either incoming or outgoing both are recorded automatically and perfectly without any skip! Meaning, after soft-reseting your device, it is not necessary that you need to start the application. The process starts itself without taking any considerable RAM/Memory and starts recording when a call connection is established.
Recording Quality:
Recording with the default notes application is only to wav format but VITO does it in both MP3/WAV formats and you can choose high/medium/low quality. Choosing MP3 medium quality was perfect enough as we are not going to make a professional recording out of a call that we make.
VAS (Voice Activation System):
Though the application has a VAS, we did'nt find it that perfect for professional audio recording. But it is rather a hardware limitation. One thing is that the microphone on your pocket pc cannot detect voices spoken at far end of the room (for recording lectures) and so the VAS system will not become that effective for use.
Built-In player:
You don't need to open the recorded files on a different application such as media player to play as the VITO Audio Notes application has a simple player functionality built-in to it.
Storage Location:
Can switch between Main Memory or Storage Card for storing recorded files and it is always adviced to store them on Storage Cards as these files are going to be large enough and so no need to be in Main Memory running out of space.
Additional Features:
Microphone auto-gain feature is something that you can use in the software to make the microphone more sensitive to feable sounds. One more feature is that, if you have to send the recorded file to someone via MMS or E-Mail, there is no need to locate it in File Explorer and attach it manually, you can directly do it from the application.
Performance and Memory:
The application seems to be perfectly designed and there is no considerable usage or leakage of memory. No complaints under this heading. Support and Documentation:
The application is very simple and easy to use and so you may never need to call them for support or refer the documentation. And ofcourse the 14 day trial period is more than enough to decide if you want the application or not. Website Link Trial Download Purchase
Conclusion:
Though the windows mobile hardware limitations are there when it comes to call/audio recording, when you need to make the best of possible with recording, VITO Audio Notes is definitely a must have.
